What does 53d North do?

53d North is a UK-based AI consultancy and software engineering firm. We assess, build, deploy and scale production-grade AI systems for small and medium enterprises. Every engagement follows the same four stages, and senior engineers lead every one of them.

Are you an AI consultancy or a software developer?

Both. Like an AI consultancy, we help you work out where AI will pay off, starting with our assessment workshop. Unlike most consultancies, the same senior engineers then build, deploy and support it, so our advice is always grounded in what can really be built.

Who do you work with?

Small and medium enterprises in the UK that want AI to do real work in their business, not just a pilot. Our engineers have built systems for automotive retail, contact centres and service businesses.

What does "human-led" mean?

Our AI agents do the volume work at speed. Our engineers set the direction, approve every plan, review every change before it merges, and make the go-live decision with you. Agents never promote anything to production on their own.

How does the AI assessment work?

Assess is a one-day, facilitated AI Problem Framing workshop based on Design Sprint Academy's method. Six to eight people from your business work through five phases, each ending in a decision. You leave with one signed-off AI Use Case Card, plus our engineering view on data readiness, risk and feasibility.

What is the Code Factory?

It's our own AI-native engineering platform. A team of specialist agents plans, builds, tests and reviews software on a git backbone. Their work is checked by an independent security reviewer that never sees the brief. Engineers approve the plan and the release.

What is an AI Code Audit?

An independent health check of software you already rely on. Our Code Factory sweeps the whole codebase across eight lenses, and our engineers verify every serious finding. You get a prioritised findings register, an architecture map and a long-term support recommendation.

Where will our AI system run, and where does our data go?

We'll recommend one of four options: a managed AI service, your own cloud account, UK private hosting, or on-premises hardware. The choice depends on your data, budget and risk appetite. Data residency is signed off by our CTO, who is also our named Data Protection Officer.

Which AI models do you use?

We're not tied to one provider. We test frontier models such as Anthropic Claude and OpenAI, open models we can self-host, and small specialist models against your own data. Then we choose for each task on accuracy, cost, speed and where the data is allowed to go.

Can you work alongside our existing team or supplier?

Yes. We can run systems for you, run them jointly with your team, or hand them over completely. Our audit reports and documentation are yours to use with any partner.

Are you ISO 27001 and Cyber Essentials certified?

Yes. Our information security management system is certified to ISO/IEC 27001, and we hold Cyber Essentials certification. Our CTO is also our named Data Protection Officer. Certificates and our security pack are available on request.
